Job Description

The Department of Art, a NASAD accredited institution, is comprised of six full time faculty and ten adjunct faculty whose diverse artistic pursuits provide a wide range of educational opportunities for students. The Department has 118 art majors who are pursuing BA and BFA degrees in six areas of study. We also offer a one year Occupational Endorsement Certificate in Graphic Design and a Minor in Art. Our mission is to prepare and empower students to use their creative abilities to make a difference in our community. A comprehensive multi-studio approach encourages innovative thinking, strengthens creativity and technical ability and develops a broad knowledge of historic and contemporary art and design.

The Department of Art within the University of Alaska Anchorage is accepting applications for a full time, tenure track position in Art History. This is an entry level tripartite position with a rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will also hold the Talbot-Sage Professorship of Art, a 3-year position with special funding for creative activity and professional development.

This position is comprised of teaching a variety of core classes such as Western Art, Modern and Contemporary Art and Art Appreciation. We are seeking to diversify our upper division class offerings by finding a candidate who may focus on topics such as ethnicity, indigenous art of the Americas, gender and racial studies, or other specialized areas of interest. A candidate must be committed to mentoring student by teaching in a variety of modalities, engage in critical discourse and encourage innovative thinking. An ideal candidate will contribute to a fair, collegial, and equitable environment that cultivates a sense of inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of our community.

The main service component of this position entails the management and curation of our on campus exhibition space, the Kimura Gallery. During the last 20 years, the gallery has hosted over 100 exhibitions of national and international artists such as Dalton Ghetti, Sandow Birk, Jose Bedia, and Shirin Neshat. The Kimura Gallery is an educational facility that provides students and the public the opportunity to see and experience a wide range of art forms first hand created by innovative artists. The programming schedule of the gallery is integrated into the course work of Art History, Art Appreciation and studio art classes.

The applicant should engage in research and publication that is related to personal areas of interest as well as Kimura Gallery programming. We are looking for a candidate who is developing a track record of excellence in professional and scholarly achievement.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and  full employee benefits package .
