Hourly Compensation Rate: $20.00 - $23.22

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is accepting applications to fill a Legal Assistant position in our Affirmative Civil Enforcement section. The successful candidate will assist in investigating and litigating interesting, important cases in which the OAG is asserting claims on behalf of the state. The section litigates a wide range of plaintiff-oriented cases such as false claims, breach of contract, illegal annexations, enforcement actions on behalf of the State of Kansas, representing state agencies in administrative disciplinary/licensing matters, ensuring Kansas’ compliance with the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), and pursuing judgments on behalf of the state. The successful candidate will assist in investigating and litigating such cases in a team environment.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Review documents and interview potential witnesses in relation to pursuing civil or administrative enforcement matters on behalf of the State.
  • Calendaring/Scheduling for multiple Assistant Attorneys General
  • Review, organize, and maintain case materials
  • Draft pleadings, subpoenas, discovery and correspondence
  • Assist in deposition and trial preparation
  • Provide assistance at trials, including document/exhibit management, witness coordination, and other duties as needed
  • Process daily incoming and outgoing correspondence for the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Section through mail, email and fax
  • Input and maintain data in the electronic document and case management systems
  • Responsibility for various administrative functions including accurate data entry, mailings, filing, proofreading, office supply maintenance, publication requests or other administrative assignments as needed

TRAVEL
The primary work location for this position is at 120 SW 10th Street, Topeka, Kansas. Occasional in-state travel may be required. A valid driver’s license is required when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary in a legal office setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Experience working in a customer service oriented environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills are required.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Four (4) years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary in a legal office setting.
  • Experience working with an electronic document management/case management system.
  • Electronic discovery experience.
  • Experience with electronic filing.

TRAVEL:

You may need to travel to locations to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Limited in-state travel may be required. A valid driver's license is required when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
