Job Description

Position: Major Gift Officer Job Status: Full-Time Location: Remote (continental U.S.) Salary: commensurate with experience Life Legal Defense Foundation, located in Napa, California, is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to protecting vulnerable human life from conception to natural death. Since 1989, Life Legal has provided pro bono legal defense for the unborn, safeguarded patients denied life-sustaining care, and stood with pro-life advocates silenced for speaking the truth. Through litigation, education, and public advocacy, Life Legal advances the Gospel of Life through the courts and the public square-defending every life as a sacred gift worth protecting. Our staff of full-time attorneys handles a wide range of cases-both civil and criminal-from the local courtroom all the way to the Supreme Court. We also have a nationwide network of pro-life attorneys who assist with local filings and emergency cases. Our vision is a culture that upholds the fundamental principle that every human life is made in the image of God and deserving of protection from conception to natural death. Our Mission is dedicated to upholding the sanctity of human life through passionate litigation, robust advocacy, and comprehensive education. We defend the rights of the unborn, protect the vulnerable, and promote a culture that recognizes life as a sacred gift at every stage. Through our witness in law and culture, we strive to build a society where every life is cherished, protected, and valued as a reflection of God's image. The Position: As a Life Legal Defense Foundation Major Gift Officer, you will develop and implement our major gift relationships. You'll be responsible for managing and cultivating relationships with existing major gift donors, and prospects, as well as identifying new prospects. You will invite benefactors into deeper partnership with Life Legal's mission and help them accomplish their philanthropic goals in service to life. You'll be expected to manage a list of donors and prospects that will result in achieving your annual revenue goal. As a major gift officer, you are privileged to:

  • Help our donors accomplish their philanthropic goals and ambitions through a relationship with our organization by building trusting and lasting relationships with our donors by regularly contacting them by phone, mail, email and personal visits.
  • Secure major gifts at the $10,000 to $100,000 level with the goal of raising $2 million annually
  • Challenge donors to greater levels of financial involvement.
  • Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor database and wealth screening tools
  • Manage existing portfolio of 120 donors and prospects
  • Work with the development department to align efforts and set goals
  • Create and implement moves management plans
  • Make direct, face-to-face solicitations, and assist the board and other staff with their solicitation (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications)
  • Acknowledge major donors through public and private recognition
  • Track and report progress using specific metrics
This job might be for you, if:
  • People have asked if your middle name is "Fundraise." You're a true people person with an outgoing nature. You're a self-starter and are driven by results.
  • You see fundraising as a ministry of stewardship-connecting the generosity of God's people with the defense of His most vulnerable children.
  • You have at least 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience and have shown an ability to secure individual and major gifts and meet objectives. You make donors feel valued because you're sensitive to their needs.
  • You are comfortable using a donor database, prospect research and other wealth screening tools to aid in your moves management process.
  • You can make and keep friends. You establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
  • You have honed your writing and speaking skills and use them to compel individuals to action.
  • You aren't someone who spends a lot of time in the weeds, but you know donors expect you to be organized, prepared, detail-oriented and to follow through on promises.
  • People are inspired by your determination. You bring people in line with a vision and motivate them to reach goals.
  • You will have some light physical demands (i.e. spending hours listening and talking; working on the computer and phone; driving to appointments and events; and occasionally working long days, nights or weekends) and endure traveling and being away from home for brief periods of time.
  • Most importantly, you share Life Legal's conviction that every human being is created in the image of God, and you desire to use your professional gifts in service to the Gospel of Life.
