Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in assisting pharmacists with medication preparation, dispensing, and ensuring patient safety. This role also involves providing excellent service to patients and healthcare providers, supporting pharmacy staff, and managing medication records and inventory within the hospital system.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  1. Medication Preparation and Dispensing:
    Accurately prepare and dispense medications, including oral, injectable, and topical forms, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Manage automated dispensing machine inventory by ensuring adequate stock is maintained and expired medications are removed.
  2. Medication Delivery:
    Accurately fill unit-dose carts from patient profiles in EPIC and deliver medications and controlled substances to inpatient units under a pharmacist’s supervision. Maintain appropriate records and inventory as required.
  3. Labeling:
    Properly label medications, including unit-dose packaging, and maintain thorough documentation of medication dispensation.
  4. Inventory Management:
    Assist in maintaining and organizing medication inventory, ensuring stock levels are adequate and managing medication expiration dates. Oversee medication recalls, notifying clinics and updating records accordingly. Perform quarterly clinic audits to ensure correct medication storage, usability, and reconciliation of sample books.
  5. Medication Compounding:
    Assist in the compounding of sterile and non-sterile medications, adhering to established protocols. Ensure each sterile compound is scanned into EPIC for accurate log tracking of lot numbers and expiration dates prior to pharmacist verification.
  6. Medication Reconciliation:
    Help maintain accurate patient medication records during transitions of care (e.g., admission, discharge, and transfers between departments).
  7. Patient Interaction:
    Provide patients with medication-related information under the direction of pharmacists, ensuring clear understanding of dosage instructions, side effects, and proper storage.
  8. Safety and Compliance:
    Safely handle, store, and dispose of medications in accordance with regulatory standards (e.g., HIPAA, USP, Joint Commission, Illinois Board of Pharmacy) and hospital policies.
  9. Clinical Support:
    Assist pharmacists in preparing medication therapy management reports and other clinical documentation (e.g., Controlled Substance Audit Report, After-hours Access to Pharmacy Reports).

Required Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Eligibility for licensure as a pharmacy technician through the State of Illinois.
  3. Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  6. Basic computer proficiency.
  7. Ability to operate standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, computer, printer).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent.
  2. Knowledge of IV admixtures and aseptic techniques.
  3. Familiarity with pharmaceutical products.
  4. Understanding of medical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, and drug interactions.

Hours: Approx 24 per week
