ABOUT LOS ANGELES RECOVERY CONNECT

LA Recovery Connect (LARC) is a recovery community in South LA. Our mission is to provide housing and supportive services that foster self-confidence and build healthy connections for people in recovery from substance use. We meet people where they are and work to offer support, as we expand our affordable recovery housing and create recovery job opportunities.

THE RECOVERY COACH OPPORTUNITY

LARC is seeking a Part-Time Peer Recovery Coach who is eager to add value and purpose to the lives of community members in our healthy and growing recovery community. As a mentor within the organization, the Recovery Coach is charged with providing strengths-based support for persons with or in recovery from substance use disorder. The ideal candidate engages, inspires, and facilitates meaningful conversations and relationships with LARC Community Members. They assist our Community Members to explore, create, and meet their own recovery goals.

Collaborating with the Executive Director, House Manager and Fellow Coaches, the Recovery Coach is an integral part of our small non-profit. They are up for the tasks of supporting Community Members no matter how big or small. The Recovery Coach is able to advocate successfully and passionately as a champion for LARC & its Community. In addition, they will have had prior success in working with either a supportive recovery or mental health community. The Recovery Coach must be able to think on their feet and lead with love and trust. LARC’s Recovery Coach is a problem solver who responds to challenges effectively with sound judgment, boundaries and empathy and has the ability to respond to critical situations with high-level engagement and de-escalation skills.

The Recovery Coach will be responsible for the following:

LARC Team Support

  • Work closely with LARC leadership and team members to most effectively support community members/residents within the framework of LARC’s policies and procedures.
  • Engage with superb communication and lead with trust to maintain a safe, creative, collaborative and empathetic workspace.
  • Facilitate and lead educational groups and workshops on recovery and life skills topics.
  • Ability to support conflict resolution using restorative practices, nonviolent communication and other respectful and empathetic tools.

LARC House Community Member/Resident Support

  • Work with LARC House Residents to create a Recovery & Wellness Plan using SMART Goals. Periodically check in on how the plan is being maintained.
  • Support residents on their recovery pathway while building trust, rapport and respect for their autonomy.
  • Foster community and healthy boundaries as residents turn inward, working on their growth and healing.
  • Participate in walks, cook meals and engage in other activities to build trust and rapport with residents.
  • Support residents in holistic ways to encourage good mental & physical health practices, at times cooking meals together.
  • Maintain healthy boundaries as a coach.

Transportation Support

  • Ability to help schedule, ride public transportation with, or transport residents when necessary.

Safeguarding LARC Community

  • Take the safety of the LARC Community/Residents seriously.
  • Deeply understand and enforce all rules and policies.
  • Work closely and openly with colleagues to maintain a safe community for all who enter LARC spaces on-site or off-site.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Required

  • Lived experience with substance use and in long-term recovery or family recovery
  • Willingness to attend training and stay up to date on the latest happenings in the Recovery Coach/Peer Specialist space.
  • Strong boundaries and ability to enforce policies and rules.
  • Proven track record of case management style support services.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the science of substance use disorder.
  • Demonstrable background in working with diverse groups of people.
  • A general understanding of the political, business, and recovery climate in California.
  • Ability to leverage professional and personal networks to support community members with resources to meet basic needs.
  • Excellent written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work under pressure and with deadlines.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work as a positive, enthusiastic member of a team.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of participant interactions, progress, and outcomes using designated software or documentation systems.
  • Drug Test Clearance
  • Computer proficiency
  • Meets qualifications for driving through the approved human resources process including DMV check.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of car insurance required for the duration of employment with LARC.

Preferred

  • Experience in the Los Angeles recovery community
  • One year of maintained recovery
  • Bilingual English / Spanish
  • Willingness to commit to working as a part-time Recovery Coach for one year, with the possibility of extending the assignment
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred, but not required.

OVERVIEW

  • Hourly: $35-$38/hr + $30 per month gas stipend
  • Part-Time: Every Sunday 5pm-10pm, one 30 min check in call per week, commitment to one year of part-time Recovery Coaching with LARC
  • Work Location: on-site, Los Angeles, CA 90018
  • Use of personal vehicle/transportation (preferred, but not required)
