Description of Work Unit Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Walter Scott Jr. College of Engineering (WSCOE) at Colorado State University is a dynamic and diverse college comprising approximately 170 faculty, 300 postdoctoral scholars and research scientists, 95 academic and administrative staff, 2,500 undergraduate students, and 1,050 graduate students. WSCOE prides itself on its “hands-on” experiential approach to engineering education, offering extensive laboratory and team-based coursework alongside research opportunities.

The Engineering Success Center within the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering provides support and resources to current and prospective engineering undergraduate students. This unit is responsible for undergraduate recruiting efforts, retention initiatives, academic advising, diversity and access initiatives, career support services, administering scholarships, and coordinating WSCOE events.

Position Summary The Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering at Colorado State University seeks a full-time, 12-month Undergraduate Academic Advisor dedicated to supporting first-year students as they transition into rigorous engineering programs. This position provides comprehensive advising and programming aimed at fostering student success, retention, and a sense of belonging within the College.

Key responsibilities include guiding students in academic planning, overcoming challenges, and utilizing campus resources; supporting orientation sessions and academic transitions; managing academic records and communications; and assisting with initiatives to improve student success metrics. The advisor will actively address the unique strengths and needs of a diverse student population.

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor will contribute to a variety of initiatives that align with the college’s strategic goals, including student success programs, outreach, and professional development efforts.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the US by the proposed start date; the department will not sponsor a visa for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related degree.
  • Experience advising, counseling, and/or providing academic support for students.
  • Experience with advising students in a one-on-one setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of professional experience in academic support.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience developing intervention strategies for supporting academic success.
  • Experience using advising and student tracking software.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category: Academic Advising

  • Advise students on academic requirements, scheduling of classes, and utilizing campus resources.
  • Help students improve GPAs and overcome academic difficulties.
  • Process documents related to overrides, exceptions, and other advising issues.
  • Abide by FERPA regulations to uphold students’ privacy.
  • Support efforts to streamline communication to students regarding deadlines, resources, and events.

Job Duty Category: Program Administration

  • Help manage undergraduate first-year program with programmatic matters and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the exploration and implementation of best practices to support student success.
  • Participate in recruitment events for incoming undergraduate students.

Job Duty Category: General Administrative/Outreach

  • Attend regular meetings with academic advisors and staff meetings.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with the supervisor for professional development.
  • Complete end of the year reports detailing staff activities and student success metrics.
