Work LocationHybrid Expected duration3-6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The North America Office helps to implement the UN Environment Programme's Regional programs in North America by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental, challenges, opportunities and emergencies. The position will report to the Regional Information Officer. The Environmental Communications Intern will undertake a range of assignments to engage with regional audiences to raise environmental awareness and promote change in policy and practice. This will include the following duties: • Generate content ideas and social media strategies to promote existing and new UNEP digital platforms; • Contribute to the implementation of global campaign activities and advocacy initiatives in the region; • Assist in the planning and coordination of events, meetings, and key UN International Days; • Manage the external web site as well as the internal intranet presence; • Use design software (such as Canva and Adobe) and photography to create compelling graphics and multi-media content; • Assist in the timely delivery of flagship information products to key stakeholders and the media; • Research and prepare clear and compelling reports, stories, presentations and other communications materials in support of organizational priorities; • Support outreach to partners, governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and other relevant stakeholders, including youth; • Attend and report back on relevant meetings, conferences, and other events, as requested; • Update and maintain contact database for stakeholders and partners, including media; • Perform any other communications-related duties, as required. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) with a focus in communications, public relations, journalism, environmental affairs, or related field . Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Teams. Knowledge of design software such as Canva and Adobe’s creative Cloud suite is an advantage. Ability to draft news articles and social media posts in desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
